Vegan travel has it's challenges (see Vegan Road Trip), so when I thought about a place called Apple Hill, I thought, "VEGAN HEAVEN!" Apple Hill has been a northern California hidden gem for a little over 50 years. We used to come here when I was a kid, and it doesn't seem to have changed too much. Now, with over 55 growers, you could easily spend all day here!
After going to an incredible used bookstore in Placerville, pretty close to where gold was first discovered, we decided to go to High Hill Ranch. High Hill Ranch is probably one of the most popular destinations on Apple Hill, due to it's large selection of food, craft vendors, and activities.
Kids played around the large on-site pond, and rode ponies. People wandered throughout the white tents home to woodworkers, photographers, and many other artisans. The delicious aroma of pie wafted from just about every door. I was stoked to wander into the food tent to see what treats we could tuck into!
We were surprised to not find many vegan options, the exception being apples and a sad veggie burger.
So unfortunately, if you're vegan, and don't just want to drink wine and apple cider and eat apples, I'll have to recommend eating prior to going to Apple Hill. All pastries seemed to have butter or milk, pies, fudge, all dairy! The dairy monster is everywhere.
But we still had a great time, and I would recommend a visit if you're in the area.
