Granola - The Basics

March 17, 2018

Granola? Everyone has their own granola recipe, right? Well, based on the shelves of prepackaged, sugary granola at the grocery store...I'm thinking there are a few of us that are not bothering to make our own. It is so very easy and, obviously, adaptable to your own palate, that I'm putting this basic recipe up for your consideration. As always, have fun, play, make it as you like it. This recipe is adapted from Thug Kitchen.

Basic Granola

Heat the oven to 300 degrees. Do you have parchment paper? Good. Line a rimmed baking sheet with this magical paper so you have super easy clean up. Wax paper is not going to work!

3 Cups oatmeal

1/2 cup sunflower seeds

1/2 cup bulgur

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

3 T ground flaxseed

1/2 cup pure maple syrup

1/3 cup olive oil

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp fine sea salt

1/2 cup dried berries of choice

Combine the oatmeal, sunflower seeds, bulgur, walnuts and flaxseed in a large bowel.

In a small bowl, mix the maple syrup, olive oil and vanilla together.Stir the wet ingredients into the dry until well blended. Add the cinnamon and sea salt and stir a few more times to incorporate.

Spoon the mix onto your parchment paper lined baking sheet and place in the oven for 40 minutes. Every ten minutes or so, give the mixture a stir so that everything can get toasted. Add your dried berries either at the 20 minute mark, or after you take it out of the oven. Let cool and then store in a large glass container with a tight lid.
