I saw the most ominous beginnings of a commercial last week. My attention was caught immediately as I watched white letters appear on a foggy grey background. Words that made me uncomfortable...that made me feel deep down to my bones that my children aren't growing properly. There may be something dreadfully wrong and I don't even notice. Never mind that my kids aren't kids anymore, I snapped to attention. Imagine my chagrin (and charming snort) when I realized I was watching a commercial for "real dairy milk". Seriously?!!! Please. Bring back the cute kids eating ice cream.
There is no reason to bore or preach to you about all the other avenues of getting your calcium, protein (yes, protein), thiamin, riboflavin...the majority of us are capable of this research. Let me just remind you...eat your fruits, vegetables and legumes. Eat real food from your garden or farmer's market. Eat like your great grandma. You don't have to be vegan or vegetarian. Choose your own path. Just don't be intimidated by marketing. Oops, papa don't preach...
Vitamin D is one of those things we always associate with dairy. Where's a great place to get that vitamin D and a healthy dose of body movement? Outside!!! Go outside. Soon. Now. Take a walk on your break. Outside. Step away from the lap top. Go outside. Look up from your phone. It's so beautiful. Golf. Garden. Take your dog for a walk. Look at those doggy eyes. How can you resist?
Besides meandering around our neighborhood, we've been hiking in some beautiful places lately. Below are some of our favorites. I'd love to hear from you, if you're willing to share. Where do you go outside?
Beauty everywhere you look at Crater Lake National Park.
Calaveras Big Trees State Park has some wonderful hiking and magical places to rest.
Or take a more challenging hike to soak up maximum sunshine.
The path leading out of the Oregon Caves into the sunshine. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine...or SPF 30...away.
